These Are America's Next Great Food Cities

These Are America's Next Great Food Cities on Food and wine

Thanks to its exceptional ability to welcome a new wave of entrepreneurs while supporting those who paved the way, the Circle City has emerged from the past few challenging years as a destination where everyone can eat well. Baked goods, in particular, have taken off. At downtown's Gallery Pastry Bar, Ben Hardy and Youssef Boudarine craft elaborate sweets like Brûlée Trillium (a croissant stuffed with berry compote, pecans, and brûléed Trillium, a decadent local triple-cream cheese) in an open-air kitchen and a dining room decorated with Moroccan lights and an Anthony Bourdain painting by Egyptian artist Salma Taman.

FINESSED MACARONS HAVE belonged famously to SoBro’s Gallery Pastry Shop for the last five years, courtesy of owners Alison Keefer and Ben Hardy. The Gallery Pastry Bar, their downtown second act, is a celebration of Vegas opulence played out in oyster flights, house breads, and inspired European-style standards.

Dining options in the Wholesale District are a bit sweeter thanks to the team from Gallery Pastry Shop, the Broad Ripple spot known for macaroons, brunch and bottomless mimosas. The spinoff, Gallery Pastry Bar, is a lot more spirited. Unlike a lot of places that put the word bar in the name, the downtown dessert lounge offers a place to get all forms of booze.

INDIANAPOLIS — Almost 4 years ago, Alison Keefer and Ben Hardy opened Gallery Pastry Shop in SoBro and quickly gained acclaim for their decadent European-inspired pastries that look as beautiful as they taste. With that success already under their belts, they decided to do something that was always on their radar: open a downtown location— which they did in early July. Their goal? To bring “brunch culture” to downtown Indianapolis.

Gallery Pastry Bar Is The Beautiful Escape We All Need Right Now

Gallery Pastry Bar Is The Beautiful Escape We All Need Right Now on Indianapolis Monthly

You might remember that sweet old mantra from The Before Time, “Think of your happy place! Go to your happy place!” In the world’s current unhinged state, the sentiment doesn’t work like it used to. In fact, it feels almost cruelly irrelevant as a pandemic rages against the backdrop of a social, political, financial, and environmental meltdown. But if, in the midst of 2020’s hellscape, there is a happy place to be found, it probably looks a lot like downtown’s new Gallery Pastry Bar.
